Talking is the key, say couple after 50 years

THERE is "no big secret" to a happy, long-lasting marriage, according to a couple who celebrated their 50th anniversary yesterday.
Bill and Kathleen Ward married in 1960, when they were both 20.
Yesterday, they were given a special blessing in front of the shrine of St Valentine at the Carmelite Church in Dublin's Whitefriar Street.
"Everyone asks that but there isn't any great secret," said Kathleen, from Mullingar. "It's just that you are committed. Good communication with one another is the biggest thing.
"A lot of people don't talk to one another any more. After that, you just get on with it and rear the family."
Bill said roses and chocolates were an easy option, but not the answer.
"I never bought her flowers in my life," he laughed. "It's artificial, commercial stuff."
Kathleen said she never missed "what I never had" but maintained that it was easier for her generation.
"We were probably better off in one way. You didn't expect as much and you didn't have much. Young people now want everything instantly."
The relics of Saint Valentine were donated to the church on Dublin's Aungier St in 1836.
A vigil on the theme of love will take place there today at 3pm.
