A GROUP of swimmers who swam from the Aran Islands to Doolin in Co Clare, have raised more than €28,000 for a children's hospital, writes Pat Flynn.
The lucky 13 braved high seas and the strong currents of the Atlantic to swim from Inisheer beach to Doolin Pier on August 21 last. A massive safety operation was mounted involving the Coast Guard, Clare Civil Defence, the Burren and Ennis Sub Aqua Clubs, while each swimmer was shadowed by a safety kayak.
Yesterday, the swimmers met with Temple Street Children's University Hospital fundraising co-ordinator Aisling Andrews who accepted a cheque for €28,184.
Ms Andrews said Temple Street had recently become the National Centre for paediatric brain and spinal surgery and confirmed that the money will go towards funding the operating theatre and hi-tech equipment for this unit.
