Suspicious death of ex-garda is probed

Paul Williams

A POST mortem is being held today following the suspicious death of an ex-garda.

Sources confirmed that gardai are probing the death of retired garda Seamus Marren (57) who died yesterday.

It is understood that Mr Marren, who quit the force in September 2011, was assaulted on Saturday night and was brought to James Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Mr Marren, from Lohunda Downs, Clonsilla, was discharged from hospital on Sunday but had continued to feel unwell.

He fell into an unconscious state at around 3pm yesterday. The emergency services were called but he was pronounced dead by the time he got to hospital.

Gardai believe the former garda died from injuries sustained during the assault.

A postmortem is currently taking place.

It is understood gardai are following a definite line of inquiry.
