A man in his 40s was last night being questioned by gardai over the murder of a man in a house earlier this month.
The suspect was arrested at about 11am yesterday, as part of the investigation into the death of Anthony Barrett (42), who is understood to have been strangled in a house in Kilkenny city on March 7.
Mr Barrett had been out drinking all day with another man the previous night, and both men returned to the other man's house on Fatima Place in Kilkenny.
The other man contacted the emergency services at about 6.30pm.
Attempts by an ambulance crew to resuscitate Mr Barrett failed and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Gardai have not released the results of a post-mortem examination carried out by assistant state pathologist Dr Khalid Jabber on Mr Barrett's body but it is understood he was strangled.
Mr Barrett, who was single, was originally from Castlecomer in Co Kilkenny but had been living recently in rented accommodation on Parliament Street in the city.
He was the only child of Mary and the late Jack Barrett.
