Suspect caught after high-speed mountain chase

A man is in custody after a high-speed chase by gardai across narrow Connemara roads that ended in a mountainside foot race.

The drama began on Tuesday evening when gardai in a patrol car became aware of a car being driven suspiciously just outside the town of Clifden on the main road towards Galway.

At Cashel, the car sped on to a treacherously narrow mountain road, heading for Rosmuc with the patrol car in pursuit.

The driver appeared to be trapped when he turned around at Rosmuc and tried to escape by ramming a patrol car.

Later he attempted to flee on foot, but gardai gave chase and eventually caught the exhausted suspect and arrested him.

He was taken to Clifden garda station, where he was questioned yesterday.
