SURFERS had heads turning in Tramore, Co Waterford, yesterday for the launch of the fourth annual Oceanic Surf and Sea Festival.
Abbey Cullen, Rose Drea and Claire Dempsey were getting some practice in ahead of the surf extravaganza, which takes place at the coastal town over three days next month.
The festival, which celebrates water sports and beach games, is being held at the close of the "traditional bathing season".
It will take place at the seaside resort from September 22-25, coinciding with the ancient celebration of Michaelmas Day, the feast day of the patron saint of seafarers, St Michael.
Traditionally, women who worked the bathing boxes on Tramore beach celebrated the end of the season by making and carrying seaweed dolls around the town and then tossing them into the sea.
On September 25, a parade featuring seaweed dolls will take place along the promenade before the traditional dumping.
Also taking place over the weekend will be a ladies' surf competition, a surf and sea art exhibition, seaweed foraging, a dog show, kite-surfing demonstrations, an emergency rescue exhibition, rock climbing, pony trekking, sea paddling, sea angling and a "rampage" BMX display.
