A HSE-run high support unit for very disturbed children is to close, amid concerns for the safety of the young residents.
The Rath na nOg centre in Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, is one of only nine such units in the country which are under pressure due to a lack of spaces.
However, it is understood the HSE will announce the closure of the 10-bed unit for boys and girls today after the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) found fire and other risks at the premises.
Staff at the centre are shocked at the decision, communicated by phone last Wednesday. Senior HSE management were due to meet them, but plans were cancelled on a number of occasions.
It is understood concern was raised in a recent HIQA report about the fire hazard caused by locking the unit's doors at 9pm.
