Support for mayor in battle with cancer

A mayor has been flooded with messages of support after confirming he is battling cancer.

The lord mayor of Cork, Cllr John Buttimer (Fine Gael, pictured), revealed that he has been diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Mr Buttimer, who is a brother of Fine Gael TD Jerry, is to start chemotherapy tomorrow.

A course of radiotherapy will follow.

Hodgkin's lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system, ranks as one of the most treatable forms of cancers if diagnosed early.

"The prognosis is good and I intend to take a very positive approach and attitude to this," he said.
