ITALIAN-born superstar jockey Franki Dettori, who was banned from riding for six months for drugs, has hailed his return to Ireland.

The rider was a firm favourite of fans at the British Irish Race Day in Leopardstown yesterday, with many shouting his name during the two races he ran.

And the jockey was in fine form as he enjoyed the warm Irish weather. "It's like being in Rome," he told the Irish Independent. It was the first time he had ridden in Ireland since he tested positive for cocaine last September.

"I love, love, love riding in Ireland. Leopardstown has been very good luck to me in the past. I'm absolutely happy to be back," he added.

Dettori rode in two races, securing a second place in the RSM Farrell Grant Sparks Handicap, though he didn't place in the William Fry Handicap.
