THERE'S a high price to be paid for Leaving Certificate success on eBay.

An online auction of Leaving Cert notes from a straight-A student saw two rival bidders send the prices soaring as they battled it out to secure the coveted prize.

At 9.43pm on Thursday night the price of Cillian Fahy's Leaving Cert French notes -- consisting of sample exam questions, graded exam answers and completed exam aural questions -- stood at €65.

By 11.03pm 48 bids had been placed pushing the price up to €1,000.

The bidders then took an overnight break and resumed at 8am yesterday, although only an extra €20 was added to bids.

Mr Fahy, from New Quay, Co Clare, got four A1s and three A2s. He is selling his notes to make money for college and was shocked by the interest his simple idea has received.

"The price went so high, naturally I thought it was a prank," he said.

But since the bidding war began Mr Fahy has been in contact with one of the bidders and believes the bids are authentic.

"I've spoken to one of the bidders through eBay and she asked me lots of questions so I think she is genuine. I was going to be happy with €40 per subject but this is great," he added.

Mr Fahy believes his notes will allow the buyer to achieve an A in the Leaving Cert and it seems that the bidders agree.

Bids

"Can you put a price on an A? From their perspective it might not be a lot of money; it depends on how much they want it."

There have been 21 bids placed for the student's Irish notes, 10 for English, eight for maths, six for history, and three for music, with Mr Fahy so far standing to earn more than €1,360. The auction ends on August 31.
