Student vanishes before exams

CONCERN is growing for a "model student" who disappeared before he was due to begin his Leaving Certificate.

Peter English from Clara, Co Kilkenny, has been missing since Saturday. The 18-year-old (right) is known in his community as a conscientious student and a "gentleman".

Gardai now believe the teen may have travelled to England. However, his family and friends are increasingly concerned about his whereabouts.

Peter is 5ft 10 inches tall, of medium build, with sandy brown hair and blue eyes.

He is a pupil at St Kieran's College in Kilkenny city and recently moved to an apartment closer to school.

Local councillor Andrew McGuinness said the community's thoughts are with Peter and his family.

"We all hope he returns home safely soon," he said.

Mr McGuinness described how exam pressure or stress among young people can "always be shared with family and those close to you".

"No amount of pressure is worth leaving home over -- or worth severe stress," he said.

"There's always somebody around, whether it's a teacher or a parent or friend, to share the burden and give you advice to help you cope."

A Clara resident said people in the area were concerned and praying for Peter's safe return.

"He's just a model student, he would have done brilliantly in his exams," the resident said.

"Everyone is just hoping that he realises he can do the Leaving Cert anytime. He's very well liked."

Another neighbour said Peter was a "lovely lad" and a "superb athlete".

Gardai are appealing to anyone with information to contact them in Kilkenny on 056 7775000 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
