A young student collapsed and died during a lecture at the University of Limerick yesterday.

The woman, named locally as 22-year-old Rachael Hogan of Castletroy, Limerick, was a final-year business and marketing student.

The student was attending a lunchtime lecture in the Kemmy Business School when she collapsed suddenly at around 12.30pm.

The university doctor was on the scene within minutes and an ambulance was called.

Tragically, efforts to resuscitate Ms Hogan proved unsuccessful and she was taken to University Hospital Limerick, where she was pronounced dead.

It is understood that her parents, who live nearby, arrived at the scene and were present while their daughter was being tended to.

Classmates who witnessed the tragedy were said to be devastated. A UL spokesperson confirmed that counselling will be offered to anyone affected.

Rachael Hogan was the youngest of three children.
