Alokh Thomas (22), who is studying for a Masters degree in Dublin, said opportunist burglars were looking for weaknesses that would help them get into a house. He was speaking as he recovered from being attacked in his home in Celbridge, Co Kildare, on Tuesday.

Two men gained access to Mr Thomas's kitchen through an open window and beat him with a cricket bat and stabbed him in the arms and wrists.

"One of them ran at me and hit me with the bat. He went to hit me again and I raised my arm to block him, and he hit me a second time," Mr Thomas said.

"We had left the kitchen window open, and it gave them a chance, so I would say to everyone - lock your doors and close your windows. Now I know it can happen at any time."
