A FORMER Fianna Fail Councillor was given a jail sentence and heavily fined for fraud and attempted theft yesterday.
Michael Fahy (56) from Ardrahan, who was known as the Stroke Fahy, is one the longest serving councillors in the country.
He was found guilty by a jury a fortnight ago of seven charges brought under the Larceny and Theft and Fraud Offences Acts.
Passing sentence yesterday, Judge Raymond Groarke described Mr Fahy as "a determined fraudster" who had sullied his office and rendered suspect hundreds of diligent councillors around the country.
Judge Groarke imposed concurrent prison sentences totalling 12 months and fined Fahy a total of ?75,000.
The sentence will take effect in a fortnight after Fahy was granted time to put his affairs in order, and in particular to deal with the welfare of his mother. The court heard that a total of 2,506 metres of fencing had been erected in Ardrahan under a Community Involvement Scheme operated by Galway Co Council.
