James Tynan (25) spent the evening at the night club in Hayes Hotel, Thurles, Co Tipperary and was leaving the hotel when he was set upon by a man in Liberty Square.

He was apparently hit with a single punch and fell to the ground.

Detectives are questioning a 22-year-old man from Co Tipperary about the vicious attack.

Witnesses said that James was hit out of the blue and did not see what was coming.

Gardai were called to the scene at around 1.30am yesterday morning, where they found him badly injured. It's understood he was punched at least once before he fell to the ground and banged his head.

Emergency services also attended Liberty Square, in front of the popular Hayes Hotel in the town centre.

There is CCTV in the vicinity of where the incident happened and gardai are trawling through the footage as part of their investigation.

Mr Tynan, who is from Johnstown, Co Kilkenny, was rushed to South Tipperary General Hospital in Clonmel where he remains in a critical condition.

His family, including his girlfriend Fiona Morrisey are gathered around his bedside.

The popular young man, who works with his father Pascal in Tynan Meats, is known to all of his friends as "Duff".

His shocked pals flooded his Facebook page with 'get well' messages yesterday as they prayed for his recovery.

"Thoughts and prayers are with you James... Get well soon," said Victoria Brennan on the social networking site last night.

Supt Pat Lordan has called for witnesses to come forward.
