After 10 days of fighting flood waters, Ann Connolly's home in Ballinastague, Co Galway was submerged.

The 74-year-old was described as "really devastated" by her daughter Anita Mundow who had tried along with her two brothers to save the family home.

"We fought really hard for the past 10 days but at 6am last night we finally lost the battle. We had been taking it in shifts to keep the water out, and my brothers had the hard task. They called me at 5am when things were looking bad. We all went up to reinforce the sandbags but it was all too much.

"The waves were beginning to come in over the generators which were running the pumps. My brothers were standing on the sandbags where we had the generators but I was afraid someone was going to get electrocuted. We were surrounded by water, it was no longer just a lake, it felt like a river. There was a couple of feet of water in the house," she added.

"It is all so upsetting. It's not just a house, it's all the memories. This is my mother's home and it's where she wants to be."
