BURGLARS who stole what they thought were Nazi gold bars are in for a surprise.
The two miniature bars taken from a house in Carlow town are merely replicas.
They look identical to the bullion produced by the Third Reich and even appear to bear Adolf Hitler’s signature. But they are not solid gold, just gold-plated, and are worth €20.
The criminals broke into the house on Wednesday last week between 6pm and 1.30am and found the bars in a drawer.
The homeowner said: “I’ve always been interested in the Second World War. That’s why I bought them.
“They are really small, about an inch long and half an inch across and a millimetre thick.
“But they’re heavy, so it is probably lead underneath the gold-plating. I bought them on eBay for a tenner.”
Unfortunately the thieves also took a diamond engagement ring belong to his wife.
“(It’s) far more valuable” he said. “We really want it back.”
The break-in was one of a number in the Carlow region in recent weeks.
Gardai have appealed to homeowners to increase their security and urged anyone with information to get in touch.
