Stitches in Time looking sublime
IT WAS the height of fashion in its day and needed neither horses nor a racetrack to be displayed in all its glory.
The traditional Aran Islands costume -- a shawl over pleated red skirt or petticoat -- is the centrepiece of a new exhibition at the arts centre on Inis Oirr, off the west coast.
While homespun fabric and homemade clothes were common in 19th-Century Ireland, the clothes were worn in a distinctive way on the Aran Islands.
The 'Stitches in Times' exhibition was created by Aras Eanna, in collaboration with the Comhra na nAosach island women's group.
