KEY figures to emerge from the Rape Crisis Network report:
- 89pc of perpetrators were known to their victims, once again shattering the myth of stranger rape.
- 17pc of those who spoke to rape crisis centre staff had never told anyone else about the violence they suffered.
- Over 95pc of perpetrators were male, while 85pc reporting sexual violence were female.
- During 2009, the RCNI was contacted by 12,393 people through the helpline.
