Senior officials in the Department of Defence are reviewing their bill for the Defence Forces involvement in security operations surrounding the visits of Queen Elizabeth and US president Barack Obama last May, writes Tom Brady.
Initial estimates produced by Defence Minister Alan Shatter indicated that the cost of the Queen's visit for the military would be €1.18m, while expenditure on their participation in the Obama security was €630,000, making a total of €1.81m.
However, defence officials told the Irish Independent last night that as a result of the review they were expecting the final figure to be "somewhat lower" than the original cost.
