Q THE State has spent €119m making dangerous sites including old mines safe, but the costs are expected to rise by at least another €66m.
The Comptroller and Auditor General says 31 sites need to be cleaned up to prevent contamination of soil or groundwater. But, the cost of remediating two of the most polluted – the former Irish Steel plant on Haulbowline in Cork and Kerdiffstown landfill at Naas, Co Kildare, – is not yet known. Some €52.3m has been spent on Haulbowline to date, and not until tenders are sought to complete the works will the final cost emerge.
In Kerdiffstown, some €6.3m has been spent, and the final bill is not known.
The sites must be remediated on foot of a judgment from the European Court of Justice.
Others include Avoca in Wicklow and Silvermines in Tipperary.
