State bails out swimming pool

THE Government has come to the aid of a struggling leisure centre that closed unexpectedly in April.

More than €163,000 has been allocated to Ballybunion Swimming Pool and Leisure Centre, Co Kerry. The announcement was made by Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring.

The facility was opened with much fanfare by former Sports Minister John O'Donoghue in 2007 after a 15-year local campaign. It closed suddenly and unexpectedly in April when power was cut off.

Arts Minister Jimmy Deenihan, in whose constituency it is located, said the funding had been allocated because support had been promised by the community and from schools.
