Stabbed teenager's family still in dark over attack motive

THE family of a 17-year-old who was stabbed a number of times have said they still don't know why he was attacked.

Henry Newham,  was repeatedly stabbed in the Railway Walk Area of Westport, Co Mayo, and his sister Lauren (20) said her family still weren't aware of the circumstances of the attack.

She told the Irish Independent: "He's on sedation so he's not really talking, so we don't know his story. We're waiting for him to wake up."

She said their parents Ian and Calli were with Henry at Mayo General Hospital's intensive care unit.

The teenager was seriously injured in the attack, which occurred just before 11pm on Saturday night.

He was rushed from Westport to hospital in Castlebar, where doctors performed surgery to remove his spleen. The family have been told that he is doing well.

Meanwhile, three men in their late teens who were arrested in connection with the attack have been released by gardai.

All three were released without charge and files are being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses to the attack and anyone with information is asked to contact Westport garda station on 098 50230, or the garda confidential line on 1800 666 111.
