Squad car accidents cost State €3m in 2009
COMPENSATION and legal costs of more than €3m were paid out last year as a result of accidents involving garda vehicles, writes Tom Brady.
There were 280 cases arising from claims for personal injuries and material damage following the 532 accidents.
Compensation handed out ranged from €2 to €250,000.
The C&AG reported that damage and other costs to garda vehicles amounted to €655,000, while compensation totalling €213,000 was recovered.
Gardai lodged claims under the Garda Siochana Compensation Acts in 227 cases with payments amounting to €12m.
Eighteen gardai injured on duty received compensation from €31 to €132,000, to a total of €297,000, while six civilians injured in accidents on garda premises received €48,000.
In the prisons, staff injured on duty received €682,000 and the payments ranged from €31 to €73,000 in 47 separate claims.
Prisoners lodged 83 claims for injuries they received and were awarded €640,000 while 26 civilians, hurt while visiting jails, were paid €132,000.
Payments totalling €16,000 were made towards the funeral expenses of six offenders who died in prison.
