Spend wisely, friars urge postman Pat
THEY are more accustomed to praying for the poor and needy.
But friars in Kinsale have admitted they've been praying the town's new Lotto winner doesn't squander his fortune.
Churchmen in the Co Cork town say they have asked for God's guidance that postman Pat Broderick spends his €7m Lotto windfall wisely.
Parishioners at a morning Mass at Kinsale's Carmelite Friary told of their surprise when one friar spoke from the pulpit last week about the dangers of suddenly coming into such a massive, life-changing amount of money.
Fr Stan Hession told Mass-goers: "We've been praying constantly for the winners."
"It's an awful lot of money. I'd be praying for anybody who won that amount of money.
"There's always a danger that someone who suddenly comes into a fortune like that could lose the run of themselves."
However, the seaside town's parish priest, where the newly-rich postman's wife, Mary, is a regular Mass-goer, stressed he had no worries about their future.
Fr Robert Young said Mary had been spotted at morning Mass at Kinsale parish church several times over the past week, ever since she got word of her life-changing win.
"I'm absolutely delighted for them," Fr Young said. "They are a lovely family. Mary is an altar server here and attends Mass on a daily basis and Pat is very involved in the parish. It couldn't have happened to a more worthy family."
Meanwhile Pat (47) and Mary (45) are preparing to take a long holiday to try and come to terms with their win and contemplate their future.
After picking up their €7m cheque from Lotto HQ last Thursday, Pat said his immediate plans were to pay off his mortgage, join a golf club and take care of his large family.
