The CEO of Special Olympics International, Mary Davis, has been honoured with the Albert Schweitzer Leadership for Life Award.
Ms Davis received the honour from the Ireland Chamber of Commerce at the 28th Annual American Celtic Ball at the Plaza Hotel over the weekend.
Her husband Julian accompanied her to the awards ceremony in New York. Ms Davis was appointed CEO of Special Olympics International earlier this year, becoming the first non-American to hold the title.
Ms Davis was previously CEO of Special Olympics Ireland and managing director of the Europe Eurasia branch of the organisation.
She was well known for her work in bringing the Special Olympics to Ireland in 2003, an event that was viewed as a resounding success.
Ms Davis was awarded Irish Person of the Year in 2003 for her work on the world games and in honour of her dedicated years of service to Special Olympics Ireland.
Ms Davis also ran for the Presidency in 2011. Previous winners of the prestigious award include JP McManus (2011) and Christina Noble (2014). Last year's recipient was Joe Kennedy, chairman of Knock Airport.
