Spar apologises for job sign saying 'females need only apply'

The controversial sign has been removed.

A job advertisement at a SPAR shop in Dublin city which requested that "females only" need apply caused uproar today.

A SPAR shop in the IFSC in Dublin 1 said it was seeking female staff for its delicatessen.

But when it received complaints about the sign, it apologised for "the error".

A spokeswoman told independent.ie today: “As soon as this was brought to SPAR Ireland’s attention we contacted the independent retailer and asked them to take the sign down immediately."

"The retailer has taken down the sign and has apologised for the error and any offence caused."

"SPAR Ireland is an equal opportunities employer,” the spokeswoman said.
