SOME medicines may be exempt from the increased prescription charge of €1.50, which takes affect from next year.
Health Minister James Reilly said yesterday he is looking at the possibility of not applying the charge to some cost-effective medicines.
This would act as an incentive to doctors and patients to opt for the cheapest version of the drug.
Medical card holders will be liable for a monthly bill of up to €19.50 under the changes.
The fear is that the extent of the increase ups the risk of people cutting back on vital drugs.
