The Social Democrats have appointed Brian Sheehan, a prominent activist for LGBTQ rights, as their first General Secretary.
Sheehan was the co-director of the Yes campaign in last year’s referendum for marriage equality and has been Executive Director of the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network since 2007.
He will formally take up the post on November 1st.
In a statement, Mr Sheehan said “It’s a great honour for me to take up this position with the Social Democrats. The Party has a hugely important role to play in Irish politics and social change in the years to come. The Social Democrats are ideally placed to bring the essential Irish values of fairness, justice and equal citizenship to the forefront of Irish politics.”
Róisín Shortall T.D., co-leader of the party, said “To meet our ambitions as a party we need the very best and in Brian we know we’ve got just that. Members have been joining in increasing numbers in recent weeks and we’ll be stepping up our membership drive in the weeks ahead.”
