Sniff worse than his bite as Alfie traces €1m drugs haul

CANINE officer Alfie, left, is being credited with sniffing out a €1m cache of drugs at Dublin Port yesterday.

The six-year-old spaniel, and member of the Customs canine unit, led officers to a 40-foot refrigerated container that had arrived at the port from Holyhead en route from Germany.

On inspection they found and seized 75kg of cannabis resin, 25kg of herbal cannabis and 2.3kg of cocaine, with a potential street value of €1m.

A male, believed to be a UK national in his 50s, was arrested and held for questioning.

To date, 140 seizures of herbal cannabis have been made at the port, with an estimated street value of €2.8m. More than 412kg of cannabis resin worth close to €2.5m has also been recovered since January.
