Smile – it's happiest day of the year

Alistair Grant

SMILE because today is the happiest day of the year as optimism over summer activities, holidays and warmer weather peaks.

Psychologist Dr Cliff Arnall fed every date of the year into a mathematical 'happiness' formula and the third Friday in June came out on top.

The equation used numbers to represent 'positivity factors' including social interaction, the weather, blossoming nature, holiday anticipation and childhood memories.

Dr Arnall, a happiness coach for celebrities and business leaders, said small improvements in Ireland's economy and 21C sunshine this week were also boosting the national mood.

The feel-good expert said tight finances meant fewer costly activities for families but pointed out this also meant more time at home with loved ones, which boosts happiness from relationships.

Dr Arnall's happiness formula is: O + (N x S) + Cpm/T + He.

Put more simply, a numerical value for being outdoors (O) was added to nature (N) multiplied by social interaction (S), added to childhood summer memories and positive thoughts (Cpm) divided by temperature (T), and added to holiday excitement (He).

Former Cardiff University lecturer Dr Arnall (47) based in Powys, Wales, said: "The economic climate is still hard for many but bits of good news are trickling through."
