Smash-and-grab jewellery thieves head for Border

GARDAI were last night searching for a gang responsible for a smash-and-grab robbery at a jewellers in Co Monaghan.

Two men entered the shop at Main Street, Castleblaney, in the late afternoon, where a display case was smashed after one of the gang distracted a female assistant.

The items stolen include various rings and other items of jewellery estimated to be worth several thousand euro.

Earlier, gardai in the border town were called to investigate a separate raid at another premises in the York Street area.

Detectives said last night they believed the vehicle used in the raid on the jewellery store was driven towards the Border.

Last year, more than €100,000 worth of valuables were taken during a raid at the same jewellers.
