A FORMER close associate of slain gangster Eamon Dunne was among five men in custody last night as part of an investigation into an illegal debt collection operation.

The man, considered a senior figure in Dublin's gangland scene, was a close adviser to Dunne, known as 'The Don' who was gunned down in a pub in Cabra in April.

Dunne (34) was at the time the most feared criminal in the capital and reputed to have been behind at least a dozen murders in recent years.

The arrests came as part of an investigation by the Garda Organised Crime Unit, backed by officers from east Dublin, into illegal debt collection.

Detectives have been investigating complaints that two builders hired criminals to intimidate people who owed them large sums.

It is understood serious threats were made against a number of people and that property was damaged.

Armed detectives searched six houses in Leixlip, Co Kildare; Kildare town; Rathoath, Co Meath; Raheny and Killester in Dublin yesterday.

They arrested five men aged between 28 and 77.

Two of the men were being held in Dun Laoghaire, two in Blackrock and a fifth in Dundrum garda station.

They can be held for up to three days.
