Skipper recalls horrifying moment yacht flipped over
A YACHT skipper has told of the terrifying moment when strong winds "literally flattened" his boat in a spectacular capsizing incident during a race off the Irish coast.
Two French brothers, one of whom suffered a fractured pelvis, were airlifted to hospital after the 70ft boat was flipped upside down during the Route des Princes race outside Dun Laoghaire harbour.
Nine crews had been taking part in the 3,000-mile event between Valencia in Spain and the Bay of Morlaix in France when the incident happened.
Jacques Guichard was one of eight people on board the Spindrift when it capsized shortly after Saturday's inshore race began.
Jacques's brother, the boat's skipper Yann Guichard, said they were at the limit of weather conditions.
"It all happened in a split second. Jacques was with me in the cockpit and we found ourselves in the net. We managed to get out and then we were airlifted. The mast broke in two when Spindrift turned over."
