Francis Fitzgerald's request comes in light of the recent PSNI investigation into the murder of Belfast man Kevin McGuigan.

The Defence Minister said that he supported the Justice Minister fully in her quest for answers.

Simon Coveney said that the two 'brutal' murders in Northern Ireland were criminal acts and need to be examined.

"Are the PSNI wrong? Is George Hamilton wrong? Is Francis Fitzgerald wrong? I don't think so.

"They have an obligation to do more to convince the public and to reassure them that the party have broken their link with the violent actions of the past," he told RTE's Morning Ireland.

He said that claims this morning by Sinn Fein TD Caoimhghin O Caolain that ex-IRA members now dedicated their time to GAA clubs and sports clubs within the community were 'far fetched.'

"They have a party leader, Gerry Adams, who asserts that he was never a member of the IRA yet last weekend he's describing them as an undefeated army," Mr Coveney said.
