Singer's husband jailed over 'safety' breach
THE husband of a country music singer has been handed a jail sentence for breaching a court-imposed "safety" order.
Don Sherry (63) is married to Gloria Sherry, the well-known singer whose hit 'One Day at a Time' remained in the charts for 90 weeks in the late 1970s.
Ms Sherry (60) said in evidence her estranged husband, with whom she was sharing a house, had entered her bedroom and threatened her while he was drunk on August 6 last.
She also claimed it was "the third time this happened" and she was put in considerable fear.
Don, otherwise known as John Sherry of Tirnaskea, Tydavnet, Co Monaghan, was charged with the alleged breach of an earlier court safety order on August 6 last.
Judge Sean MacBride was told that the singer and her husband were married in 1973 but their relationship had broken down last year.
Don Sherry in evidence denied he entered the singer's bedroom and claimed they had met in a corridor at the house.
He admitted he asked his wife if her "boyfriend" was putting ugly rumours around that he was a homosexual.
He added that a man he had met in a pub in Monaghan town on the previous night had told him someone was recently enquiring if he was "a queer".
Judge MacBride said he believed the accused had threatened the female singer in her own private bedroom and was in breach of earlier court orders not to interfere with her.
The judge said he was imposing a six-month jail sentence in Wheatfield Prison.
