A musical tribute was also paid by family friend and neighbour Sinead O'Connor, pictured by Steve Humphreys, who sang a haunting version of 'Make Me A Channel of Your Peace' to a packed congregation of actors, writers, musicians and politicians at the funeral in Monkstown, south Dublin.

Mr Lambert (82), who died on Monday, was a child at heart who understood children, mourners were told.

"He really is on board 'Wanderly Wagon' for the last time," remarked one onlooker .
