Silver surfers take the internet in their stride
A granny who was once frightened of new technology but is now described by her husband as "the mistress of the computer" was feted at Google headquarters yesterday.
She was cited as an inspiration for older citizens to embrace the internet and other technologies.
Grandmother Dorothy Harrington (76), from Sandymount, south Dublin, was named as the overall winner of the Google Silver Surfer Awards yesterday.
But it wasn't that long ago the mere mention of computers or mobile phones sent her scurrying away. "I avoided them because I was so frightened," she said.
But after buying a computer to book her husband a surprise trip to Canada, she is now a regular on Facebook and Skypes her friends and relatives several times a week.
Larry Wilmott was also awarded the Golden IT award for computer users over the age of 90.
"It's (the internet) kept me young," he said.
