Siege ends at prison in the North
A siege involving 28 republican prisoners at Northern Ireland's high security Maghaberry jail dramatically ended last night.
The inmates had barricaded themselves into a room after Mass on Easter Sunday. The protest, however, ended last night after authorised "intervention" by prison staff.
The decision to end the protest was taken by Northern Ireland Prison Service director Robin Masefield. It is understood that staff forced their way into the room during the operation, which lasted over an hour.
A Prison Service spokesman confirmed that all the prisoners had returned to their cells.
