Siege ends as man is Tasered

A FOUR-hour siege at a house ended after gardai used a Taser to subdue a 34-year-old man who had barricaded himself inside, writes Tom Brady.

Officers said they feared that the man, who was armed with a knife, might have harmed himself. As negotiations got under way at the house in Mountmellick, Co Laois, gardai became concerned when the man issued threats and was seen waving the knife.

Members from the regional support unit forced in the front door and when they were confronted by the man, they used the Taser before taking possession of the knife.

The man, who was alone but lived in the house rented by his father, was escorted from his home by detectives and taken to a nearby hospital.

Supt Yvonne Lundon said the man appeared under stress and was dealing with the gardai "in an agitated manner".
