Shotguns maim, rifles kill: expert
SHOTGUNS are used to maim -- but rifles and handguns are more likely to kill, according a doctor who has examined gun crime in Dublin, writes Eilish O'Regan.
Dr Ian Murphy, a specialist registrar in St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin, looked at 59 patients who had been shot over the space of a decade.
He said two of those who received shotgun injuries died but nearly half those injured with a rifle or handgun lost their lives after the attack.
Shotguns, which fire pellets, tend to injure around the extremities, he told the annual meeting of the Faculty of the Radiologists at the Royal College of Surgeons.
