Shops warned over toll-fee pay surcharge

RETAILERS offering customers Payzone facilities to pay the M50 toll have been warned their contracts will be ended if they add a surcharge.
The Irish Independent has learned that two retailers were disconnected from the Payzone system after they were found to be charging an additional 50 cent on the toll, increasing the €3 single charge by 17pc.
The service was then reinstated after both agreed not to impose the 50c surcharge.
EFlow, which was contracted by the National Roads Authority to operate the service, said that while not in any way unlawful, the practice of additional charges was "totally unacceptable".
The two retailers -- Cassidy's on the Ardee Road and Cassidy's (no relation) on the Dundalk Road -- defended their practice and said they only charged 50c even if the driver purchases tolls for multiple journeys.
Shane Cassidy of the Dundalk Road shop said "most places are doing it".
However this was disputed by eFlow, which said there had been about "half a dozen" retailers nationwide found to be increasing the charges.
