Shocked mother describes son's love of the water
A MOTHER of one of the kayak drowning victims spoke last night of her son's love of watersports.
Brigid Smith said Connie (34) "was big into diving and swimming".
She told how gardai called to the family home in Kilnaleck, Co Cavan, to break the news.
"You have to take what comes. It's a big shock when it happens, but that's life," said Mrs Smith, adding: "We don't know the full details yet of what happened."
Connie was the third eldest of four sons and is also survived by two sisters.
Mrs Smith also said he had worked for GOAL over many years in Afghanistan, Somalia and Angola.
Last night, the charity said it had learnt of his death with "profound regret".
