Shatter honours Irish peacekeepers

THE contribution of Irish soldiers to peacekeeping in Lebanon was recognised with a medal ceremony at Camp Shamrock.

Minister for Justice Alan Shatter personally thanked the members for their efforts as he presented them with medals for their participation in the joint Irish/Finnish battalion serving with the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon.

"Your work and your actions here reflect very positively on Ireland," he told the troops.

He also made a commitment to ensuring that soldiers serving overseas were kept well trained and equipped.

The visit to the troops is part of a comprehensive St Patrick's Day programme in the Middle East being undertaken by the minister.

As well as Camp Shamrock, he will visit several cities in Israel where the Defence Forces are serving with the UN Truce Supervision Organisation.
