SINN Fein deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald has confirmed that party leader Gerry Adams is to meet a rape victim who was the subject of an internal IRA inquiry.
Her confirmation comes four days after the party's finance spokesman, Pearse Doherty, denied such victims existed.
Ms McDonald was commenting after it was reported yesterday that a victim has asked to meet Mr Adams.
The victim says the IRA subjected her to a secret investigation when she revealed that she – and others – had been raped by a senior republican.
The meeting between the victim and Mr Adams was facilitated by 'Sunday Independent' journalist Elis O'Hanlon.
Confirming the meeting, Ms McDonald said: "The journalist has asked that Gerry do this meeting. Naturally Gerry will meet with any victim, as would I. The important thing to remember is that a meeting with me or Gerry Adams is no substitute for going to the relevant authorities."
