SEVEN gardai were recovering from minor injuries after three cars they were travelling in were rammed during a high- speed chase.
The incident happened at Windgates between Bray and Greystones in Co Wicklow.
It followed the robbery of a poor box from St Fergal's Church in Bray at around 1pm yesterday.
A black saloon car believed to have been used in the theft was then pursued by a number of gardai in two marked and one unmarked vehicle.
The high-speed pursuit took them from Bray to Greystones and then back towards Bray when the ramming occurred at Windgates.
Seven gardai received non-serious injuries but one officerrequired hospital treatment before he was discharged.
A man in his mid-30s was arrested after the incident and was being detained at Bray garda station.
St Fergal's parish priest Fr Larry Behan said that he was not in the church when the robbery occurred but he understood several shrines containing poor boxes were smashed and that one individual was involved in the theft.
"Thank God no gardai were seriously injured as a result of this. The gardai in Bray are really great and I hope their injuries are minor and that they will fully recover," he said.
Investigating officers appealed for witnesses at St Fergal's Church or at the incident at Windgates to contact Bray gardai at 01-6665300 or on the confidential line 1800 666 111.
