Serial rapist who threatened to kill victim's baby is jailed

THE mother of a woman who suffered a horrific rape at the hands of a serial offender said last night that the man might as well have killed her.

Mark Doyle (35), of Backlane Hostel, Christchurch, Dublin, who has 33 previous convictions including two for rape, told the terrified woman that he was going to drown her baby and cut the child into little pieces after he raped her.

Doyle was jailed for 12 years at the Central Criminal Court yesterday after pleading guilty to the rape of the woman at her home on the morning of November 15, 2008.

At the time he had been out of prison for seven months.

Last night, the victim's distraught mother said Doyle might as well have killed her daughter as he had destroyed her life.

Speaking anonymously, her mother said that her daughter had nightmares and frequently woke up screaming.

"She has nightmares, she screams in her sleep, she is on heavy medication," the victim's mother said.

Mr Justice Paul Carney said a sentence of 15 years was appropriate due to the "gratuitous violence, the credible threats to kill and the effect the attack had on the woman".

But he took into account Doyle's early guilty plea and he dropped this sentence to 12 years with 10 years' post-release supervision.

He also ordered that he be added to the register of sex offenders.

The Rape Crisis Network said the case underlined the need to insist sex offenders had to undergo a risk assessment before being released from jail to ensure that they no longer presented a high risk of re-offending.
