Leonard Watters (24), an unemployed father of two from Navan, Co Meath, appeared at a brief hearing of Dublin District Court at the Criminal Courts of Justice yesterday.

Detective Inspector Michael Cryan told the court Mr Watters "made two statements to gardai that he was assaulted in a nightclub by Louis Walsh".

Gardai have now charged Mr Watters with knowingly making false statements about Mr Walsh. He claimed the music manager sexually assaulted him in the toilets of Krystle nightclub in Dublin last April.

The first statement was made by Mr Watters to gardai at Harcourt Terrace station on June 20. The second charge, added during the hearing yesterday, was for a subsequent statement to gardai at an address in Navan on June 27.

A conviction for making a false report to gardai in the district court can result in a fine or a sentence of up to 12 months. Bail terms were unchanged from the last hearing in June when Mr Watters was ordered to stay away from Mr Walsh and all of the members of Westlife. The case resumes on November 2.
