Seatbelt fault at Kia

KIA in Ireland is recalling 1,126 of its Sportage models over a potentially faulty part in the driver's seatbelt.

The models affected were made in Slovakia between October 7, 2011 and November 21, 2012. Owners with queries can contact Kia Motors Ireland customer assistance at 01 4601288.

SINGER EARL GILL DIES

Irish showband singer Earl Gill has died. The Dubliner was the lead singer of the Earl Gill Band Show, and he passed away peacefully in hospital over the weekend.

The trumpeter will be removed from Quinns Funeral Home in Glasthule, Dublin, to the nearby St Joseph's Church tonight at 5pm. Burial will take place tomorrow afternoon, following a 10am funeral mass.

TRUMP HIRES SNAIL GURU

US billionaire Donald Trump has moved to hire Ireland's foremost expert on a microscopic snail as part of his plans to revamp a golf resort on the west coast.

New plans for five-star Doonbeg Lodge and Golf Resort in Co Clare – which he snapped up for an estimated €15m last February – will increase the numbers of the protected and rare snail, the angustior vertigo.

WORKER PROTECTION CALL

A senior union lawyer has said it is difficult to see how zero-hour contracts "are compatible with human dignity and decent work".

Esther Lynch, legal officer at the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, said at NUI Maynooth last night that at least 10 new legal measures are required to protect workers hired on zero-hours- type contracts, including limiting the time a job can be filled by zero-hour staff.
