SEARCHES are underway in Galway this morning for an 80-year-old man who went missing from his nursing home last night.

Frank Helly was last seen at the Moycullen nursing home on Church Road in Moycullen, Co Galway at 7pm. Searches for the elderly man began yesterday evening and continued throughout the night.

They began again early this morning and are concentrating within a kilometer of the home. The search is being assisted by the coastguard helicopter and Casla Bay lifeboat.

Mr Helly is 6'1” in height. He was wearing a blue shirt and yellow tie, a maroon jumper and khaki-coloured trousers when last seen.

Mr Helly had only been a resident of the home for the past two weeks. He has been suffering from Alzheimer's for three years.

Gardai said they were pulling in resources from surrounding stations to assist in the search. They are appealing to landowners in the area to search their properties, land and outhouses. They are also asking any taxi drivers or motorists who may have given Mr Helly a lift to contact them.

The search by emergency services is continuing this morning. Anyone with information is asked to contact Salthill Gardai on 091- 514720
